These terms govern your use of YourVin.com. By using the site you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
1. The service
YourVin.com provides free decoding of 17-character vehicle identification numbers using the public NHTSA vPIC database, together with a check against NHTSA's public recall records and a set of reference pages covering manufacturers, model year codes and world manufacturer identifier prefixes. The service is provided free of charge for personal, informational use.
2. No warranty on accuracy
Vehicle data is retrieved from NHTSA's public databases and reflects what manufacturers filed. Those filings are the authoritative source for factory build data, but errors, omissions and gaps in the underlying records do occur, particularly for imported, low volume and older vehicles. Results are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement.
Nothing here is a substitute for a professional vehicle inspection, a title search, a vehicle history report or an official recall check with a franchised dealer.
3. Not affiliated with any manufacturer
YourVin.com is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or otherwise connected to any vehicle manufacturer, dealer group or government agency, including NHTSA. Manufacturer and model names appear solely to identify the vehicles being described, which is nominative fair use. All trademarks remain the property of their respective owners.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Scrape, crawl, harvest or bulk query the site by automated means. Developers who need bulk decoding should use the NHTSA vPIC API directly, which is free and built for that purpose.
- Interfere with, overload or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the site or its infrastructure.
- Use the site to look up vehicles for harassment, stalking or any unlawful purpose.
- Reproduce substantial portions of the site's written content without permission.
- Circumvent, remove or obscure advertising.
We may restrict or block access where we reasonably believe these terms have been breached.
5. Intellectual property
The written guides, articles, page layouts, illustrations and code on this site are our property and are protected by copyright. The underlying vehicle data is US government public record and is not claimed by us. You may quote short extracts with attribution and a link.
6. Advertising
The site is supported by third party advertising. We do not endorse advertised products or services, and any dealings you have with an advertiser are between you and them.
7. Third party links
Pages here link to external sites, including government resources and manufacturer portals. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, availability or privacy practices.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, YourVin.com and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use the site. This includes decisions made on the basis of decoded data, such as purchasing, selling, insuring or repairing a vehicle. Always verify critical details independently before a transaction.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitation of liability, so some of the above may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
9. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless YourVin.com and its operators from any claim arising out of your breach of these terms or your misuse of the site.
10. Availability
The service depends on third party APIs operated by NHTSA. We do not guarantee uptime, and decoding may be unavailable when those upstream services are down or rate limited. We may modify, suspend or discontinue any part of the site at any time.
11. Changes to these terms
We may revise these terms. The date at the top reflects the current version, and continued use after a change constitutes acceptance of it.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws applicable at the operator's principal place of business, without regard to conflict of law rules. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect.
