Every vehicle built since 1981 carries a 17-character vehicle identification number, and each position in that string means something specific. Characters 1 to 3 identify the manufacturer and country of build. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle itself: body style, engine family, restraint system and series. Position 9 is a mathematical check digit. Position 10 encodes the model year, position 11 the assembly plant, and 12 to 17 are the production serial number.
Decoding matters most when you are buying used. A listing says "2018 Accord EX-L". The VIN says what actually left the factory. Mismatches between the advert and the decode, such as a different trim, a different engine or a model year off by one, are the cheapest red flags you can catch before paying for a full history report. It is also the fastest way to find out whether a car you already own has an open safety recall, which a dealer fixes for free.

Position 9 of a VIN is a calculated check digit required on North American vehicles. Some vehicles built for other markets do not follow the rule, so an invalid check digit is not always an error. On a US market car it usually means a typo, most often a 1 read as I or a 0 read as O.
